Namibia Chapter One

FROM CITY TO OCEAN

Trying to put in to words my excitement about the trip we were about to undertake.... IMPOSSIBLE!

As usual Hubby had arrived home from work one day, we exchanged info on how our day had been while I made coffee and he placated the "kids" who were demanding his attention, he then casually says.... oh by the way, I have to go to Namibia next week would you like to go with? WOULD I!!!

Dinner was put on hold and the "kids" were shooed off to their beds while Mom and Dad discussed, googled and planned.

By now Lady had taught Jack how to look disgusted and heartbroken while I spent the next few days packing and more importantly... cleaning my camera.

The morning of our departure arrived and we set off with our sense of adventure intact, Hubby had to take a colleague with and he was quietly and confusedly amused that I was excited about spending almost two days in a car.

On the road again.....

We had left home before the sun had even raised it's head and would be spending the night  at Tautona Lodge in Ghanzi in Botswana.

Needless to say I ( the obsessive photographer ) took my camera out as soon as we reached the border as by then the sun had come up and I could start taking photos...

CATASTROPHE!!  DISASTER!!

My camera battery was flat!! The only explanation was that I hadn't plugged the charger in properly the night before, I was devastated and Hubby spent the next hour explaining to me what a charger is and how it works.... pfff.

Three weary travellers eventually arrived at Tautona Lodge, our tooshies were numb and our legs groaned as we stepped out of the car, we had come to the end of our first day of travelling and were looking forward to a hot meal, hot shower and comfortable bed, I of course could not wait to get my camera battery on charge. Alas, we got the hot meal but the hot shower and charging my battery were not meant to be, the power at the lodge was out and the generator was only powerful enough to run the kitchen.

Thankfully we were exhausted and after dinner we headed back to our chalet and headed straight to bed, we had to be on the road again by six in the morning.

Sunrise, such a beautiful time of the day, especially out in the bush, I was heartbroken that I was unable to take photos at all again that day.

The power had come on some time during the night so we each took a turn having a quick hot shower, had a cup of coffee and set off again.

We had quite an uneventful trip further and eventually reached Swakopmund at about three in the afternoon. We were staying at Alte Brucke Holiday Resort, after booking in we went to the chalet and unpacked and then headed to the store where Hubby and Phineas ( Hubby's colleague ) would be working that week so that they could meet the store manager before starting the following morning. After spending what felt like a lifetime waiting in the car they eventually returned, we then went off to get some necessities, a drink and dinner.

That evening was spent relaxing, watching television and me making sure every five minutes that the charger for my camera battery was plugged in properly and doing it's job.

After a good nights sleep, the men went off to have breakfast and then headed off to work. I had a quick shower, headed off to breakfast and then headed off to start day one of my adventure.

The sun was still wiping the sleep from it's eyes when I headed out as it rises later than back home.

A walk to the beach was first on my agenda, the smell of sea salt was heavy in the air and the breeze was crisp.

Next was a walk along the beach front, I met with quite a few feathered friends out for their morning activities...

By the time I reached the end of the promenade the sun had fully awoken but the little town of Swakopmund was still snuggling and asleep, I decided to head back to the chalet for a cup of coffee while waiting for the town to get out of bed.

This little guy arrived at our backdoor and from here on in paid me a visit every morning.

After having my caffeine fix and visiting the little girls room I headed back out.

For the rest of the day I wondered the streets of Swakopmund clicking away.

Hubby and Phineas were finished for the day by three 'o clock, we met up back at the chalet and after a change of clothes we headed off to a pub on the beach recommended by the store manager.

Now, normally visitors to a strange country try and stay under the radar, we made an unwanted, much noticed entrance....

The parking area was practically on the beach... and Hubby's vehicle was not happy to do this. Much to my very " I am a man and I know what I am doing " Hubbys' embarrassment three local female Namibians had to assist him out of his " situation ". Phineas and I quickly abandoned ship and skulked off to the pub before we could be noticed.

We quickly found somewhere to sit and ordered drinks and pretended not to know what had been going on, ( Hubby was at this point unaware of the photographic evidence ).

We spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening enjoying the view, drinks and good food.

Relaxed and exhausted we headed off to our chalet.
